Pediculosis: Experts clarify transmission and treatment of lice

Medical experts are working to dispel the myth that head lice infestations, known as pediculosis, are caused by a lack of personal hygiene or environmental cleanliness. Specialists emphasize that the parasite, Pediculus humanus capitis, does not discriminate based on social class or cleaning habits.

Transmission primarily occurs through direct head-to-head contact, which is common during school activities and play. Less frequent transmission can occur through the sharing of personal items such as hats, brushes, hairbands, pillows, and combs. It is important to note that lice do not fly or jump, and pets do not transmit human lice.

There are different types of lice, including head lice, pubic lice (Pthirus pubis), and body lice. Common symptoms include intense itching, particularly behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. Recommended treatments include the use of fine-toothed combs on damp hair with conditioner, as well as medical lotions, shampoos, or oral medications as prescribed by a doctor.
