Pedro Alliana maintains 2028 presidential bid amid Colorado Party crisis

A political crisis is unfolding within Paraguay’s ruling Colorado Party as the Honor Colorado movement faces internal fractures regarding the 2028 presidential candidacy. The tension escalated after Horacio Cartes, the powerful leader of the movement and former president, reportedly withdrew his support for Vice President Pedro Alliana in favor of Minister Juan Carlos Baruja.

In response, Vice President Alliana has reaffirmed his presidential aspirations, stating his candidacy remains firm despite the shift in party leadership support. He has indicated he may pursue his bid outside of the Honor Colorado movement if a consensus is not reached. Alliana has received formal backing from the 15 Colorado governors, who met with President Santiago Peña to express their support for the current executive leadership.

The rift has also prompted movement among the party's opposition. The Colorado dissent, led by figures such as Senator Mario Varela, aims to define its own unified presidential ticket by late December or early January. This faction includes members from Colorado Añetete and Fuerza Republicana.

Adding to the complexity, former presidents Horacio Cartes and Mario Abdo Benítez held a surprising meeting, signaling potential strategic shifts amidst the instability. Some analysts suggest the crisis was triggered by a Senate request for information from the Central Bank of Paraguay, which intensified power struggles between different factions of the ruling party.
