Pedro Castillo given June 4 deadline to fix grace petition paperwork

Peruvian authorities have set a deadline of 4 June for former president Pedro Castillo to correct deficiencies in his request for a humanitarian grace pardon. The petition, filed on 20 April, was initially ruled inadmissible because required documents were missing. Attorney Walter Ayala, who is handling the case, said the team is working to meet the officials’ requirements.

Legal analysts note that Castillo currently does not satisfy key conditions for a pardon, such as having a final sentence or completing an investigation period twice the normal length. They add that he would need to withdraw an appeal for any future sentencing to be considered.

In a related hearing, former prosecutor José Domingo Pérez, now Castillo’s lawyer, defended the former president before the Sub‑Commission on Constitutional Accusations of Congress, where the session turned contentious with exchanges among lawmakers. Castillo remains detained while investigations continue into the December 2022 coup‑attempt case.
