Pedro Castillo: Supreme Court to review preventive detention

The Supreme Court of Peru is scheduled to conduct a virtual hearing on September 30 to review the preventive detention of former President Pedro Castillo. The hearing, led by provisional Supreme Judge Juan Carlos Checkley, will begin at 8:30 a.m. to determine if the legal requirements for maintaining his detention remain valid.

Castillo is currently held at the Barbadillo prison and is under investigation in several cases, including those involving Petroperú, Puente Tarata, and the Ministry of Housing. Prosecutors allege his involvement in criminal organization, simple collusion, and aggravated influence peddling to the detriment of the Peruvian state.

The periodic review is mandated by Legislative Decree 1585 and Constitutional Court jurisprudence, which requires reassessing coercive measures every six months. Previously, in February, his detention had been extended for 12 months, a decision later confirmed by the Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court.
