Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library to undergo RD$ 264 million renovation

The Ministry of Housing, Habitat, and Buildings (MIVHED) has announced a RD$ 264 million investment for the comprehensive remodeling of the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library. The project aims to address severe structural deterioration caused by years of water infiltration, which has damaged over 70% of the building.

According to MIVHED Vice Minister Ernesto Mejía, the issues have compromised the air conditioning systems, flooring, and window carpentry. Rafael Peralta, director of the National Library, noted that the accumulated humidity has directly affected historical book collections and posed health risks to staff.

The renovation will include waterproofing, electrical and HVAC modernization, and landscaping to meet international standards for document conservation and academic research.
