Pedro Ibarra Library preserves five centuries of Elche history

The Pedro Ibarra Central Library in Elche preserves over five centuries of written history through its extensive special collections. The library's historical holdings include ten incunabula with printed works dating back to 1486, as well as more than 170 volumes from the 16th and 17th centuries.

A significant portion of the ancient collection originated from the secularization of local convents, which helped safeguard religious, cultural, and intellectual heritage that might otherwise have been lost. The archives also feature over one hundred historical newspaper mastheads and documentation spanning various eras, including records from 20th-century political parties, the National Institute of Secondary Education of Elche, and the Children's School Group.

To assist researchers, the library provides specialized reference tools, including digitized catalogs for incunabula and 16th and 17th-century prints, developed by Carmen Gutiérrez Cardona and Rafael Navarro Mallebrera. Documents from the 18th through 20th centuries can be located via the general library catalog.
