Pedro Pablo Pichardo appeals TAD decision in Benfica contract dispute
Olympic triple jump champion Pedro Pablo Pichardo is appealing a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD) regarding his contract termination with Benfica. While the TAD ordered Benfica to pay approximately 130,000 euros in legal costs, 22,000 euros in holiday allowances, and reimbursement for a surgical procedure, it denied Pichardo’s claim of ‘just cause’ for his unilateral contract rescission.
Pichardo, who sought 1.1 million euros citing a lack of medical care and health insurance access, has accused the TAD of partiality. In a social media statement, the athlete alleged the tribunal favored Benfica due to the club’s significant influence in the country. He stated that the decision was based on allegations rather than the evidence provided.
Benfica had countered by seeking 2 million euros, alleging breach of contract and reputational damage. The TAD ruling also dismissed allegations of workplace harassment against the club. Pichardo’s legal counsel, Rosalia Ortega, confirmed the intent to appeal the decision within the TAD or, if unsuccessful, move to administrative courts.
