Pedro Sánchez begins Lanzarote vacation amid Ceuta migration crisis
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in Lanzarote on 1 August, travelling on a Falcon aircraft of the Spanish Air Force. He landed at César Manrique Airport and proceeded to the official summer residence La Mareta in Costa Teguise, where he will remain until 24 August.
His stay follows a visit to the autonomous city of Ceuta, where a migration surge saw about 50 000 people cross from Morocco in a single week, more than 48 000 of them return voluntarily and 67 deaths were recorded. The episode has been described as one of the most serious recent migration crises in the area.
Security for the vacation has been reinforced: the Guard Civil’s Grupo de Reserva y Seguridad (GRS) will deploy between 30 and 50 members, alongside the usual seven service assistants and specialised protection agents. The Capitanía Marítima de Las Palmas also imposed a temporary navigation exclusion zone off the coast of Costa Teguise.
During the holiday, Sánchez posted a summer music playlist on Instagram, which attracted strong reactions on social media given the timing with the Ceuta crisis.
