Pedro Sánchez starts Lanzarote vacation as Ceuta migration crisis unfolds
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in Lanzarote on 1 August 2026, landing at César Manrique Airport aboard a Falcon aircraft of the Spanish Air Force. He and his wife Begoña Gómez proceeded to the official residence La Mareta in Costa Teguise, where they will stay until 24 August. The stay is being protected by an expanded security detail that includes between 30 and 50 members of the Guardia Civil’s Grupo de Reserva y Seguridad (GRS) and a temporary navigation exclusion zone has been imposed off the coast of Teguise by the Capitanía Marítima de Las Palmas.
The vacation follows Sánchez’s visit to the autonomous city of Ceuta, where an intense migration surge saw about 50 000 people cross from Morocco, more than 48 000 return voluntarily, and 67 deaths were recorded – one of the most serious incidents in recent years. While the government is managing the border emergency, Sánchez posted a summer music playlist on social media, a move that sparked widespread criticism for its timing.
The combination of the migration crisis, heightened security measures, and the leader’s public playlist has generated significant political debate in Spain and across the EU.
