Spain: Pedro Sánchez calls snap general elections for November 29

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for snap general elections to be held on November 29, following the parliamentary defeat of his government's emergency housing measures. The decision comes amid a significant housing crisis characterized by rising rents and high eviction rates.

During a pre-campaign rally in Ponferrada, Sánchez urged progressive voters to mobilize, framing the election as a choice between a social justice-oriented government and a right-wing coalition of the Popular Party (PP) and Vox. He also addressed legal disputes regarding the rights of descendants of Francoist exiles, calling on the Supreme Court to prevent what he described as an attempt to infringe upon their voting rights.

Opposition leaders, including PP spokesperson Ester Muñoz, have criticized the Sánchez administration, characterizing the election as a choice between national reconstruction and the current government, which they have labeled as corrupt. Muñoz specifically highlighted the economic difficulties faced by citizens and attributed over 270,000 evictions to the current administration's policies.
