Pedro Sánchez receives 2026 Athens Democracy Award

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been awarded the 2026 Athens Democracy Award by the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas. The award was presented during a meeting at the Palacio de la Moncloa in Madrid on September 29.

The recognition honors Sánchez for his defense of human rights, democratic institutions, social justice, and international solidarity. Mayor Doukas highlighted Sánchez’s ‘political courage’ in addressing critical global issues, including his refusal to allow Spanish military bases to be used for operations against Iran, his recognition of the Palestinian state, and his condemnation of the situation in Gaza. Doukas also noted Sánchez’s efforts to regulate artificial intelligence against ‘techno-oligarchs’ and his 2018 decision to welcome the Aquarius migrant rescue ship.

The award was officially presented at the Stoa of Attalos as part of the Athens Democracy Forum 2026. In a recorded message, Sánchez expressed his deep gratitude and humility, stating that the honor belongs not just to him, but to public servants, civil society, and journalists who strengthen democratic institutions.
