Pedro Sánchez: Ten years since the PSOE federal committee crisis
Ten years after the turbulent federal committee meeting on October 1, 2016, former members of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) reflect on the internal crisis that led to Pedro Sánchez's resignation.
During that period, the party was deeply divided over whether to abstain to allow a government led by Mariano Rajoy. The decision to abstain ultimately prevailed, resulting in Sánchez's resignation as secretary general and deputy. Former minister Carmen Montón has since described receiving ‘brutal pressure’ during the proceedings.
Ximo Puig, the former president of the Generalitat, characterized the management of that period as ‘one of the most catastrophic moments in the history of the PSOE’ and an ‘immense error.’ Despite his initial defeat, Sánchez returned to leadership in late 2016, eventually becoming Prime Minister.
