Spanish monarchs to visit Ceuta and Melilla amid migration crisis

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are scheduled to visit the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla on October 13 and 14, 2026. This marks the first official visit by the current monarchs to these North African enclaves since Felipe VI ascended the throne in 2014.

The royal visit occurs amidst a significant humanitarian and security crisis. Following a massive influx of migrants from Morocco in late July 2026—where tens of thousands attempted to enter Ceuta—the region continues to face social tension and strained resources. The visit is intended to show support for the local populations and reinforce Spanish sovereignty over the territories.

Diplomatically, the trip carries high stakes. Morocco maintains a claim over both cities, and previous royal visits have historically triggered diplomatic friction between Madrid and Rabat. While the visit was coordinated between the Spanish Royal House and the government, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is not expected to accompany the monarchs, a move that has drawn political commentary regarding the internal handling of the migration crisis.
