Peene-Werft faces potential order gap following F126 project halt

The Peene-Werft shipyard in Wolgast faces a potential order gap in 2027 following the halt of the F126 frigate project. The cessation of this naval program has created uncertainty regarding the shipyard's long-term capacity and employment stability.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's state government is calling on the German federal government to secure new orders to maintain modern shipbuilding capabilities and regional jobs. Specifically, officials are advocating for the shipyard's involvement in the construction of MEKO-type frigates or a fourth fleet service vessel.

Rheinmetall, which has owned the shipyard since March 2026, acknowledged that the Wolgast site is expected to face underutilization in 2027 due to the F126 decision. However, the company expressed confidence that the freed-up capacity could be utilized for other German Navy new-build programs. While various options are being evaluated, no binding decisions regarding specific replacement contracts have been made, leaving the impact on employees currently unconfirmed.
