Pegasus Airlines aircraft enters runway in wrong direction at Frankfurt Airport

A Pegasus Airlines Airbus A321neo, operating flight PC-996 from Frankfurt am Main International Airport to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, entered a runway in the wrong direction on Tuesday, October 20.

The aircraft, registration TC-RDO, entered runway 18 and began moving toward runway 36. Air traffic control intervened, instructing the crew to abort the movement. Reports indicate the aircraft reached a ground speed of approximately 31 to 35 knots before the error was identified and the takeoff attempt was halted.

Pegasus Airlines issued a statement clarifying that the crew identified the error and coordinated with the tower to exit the runway. The airline emphasized that no actual takeoff attempt was made, despite some reports suggesting otherwise. Following the incident, the aircraft taxied back and successfully departed for Istanbul approximately seven minutes later.

Germany’s air navigation service provider, DFS (Deutsche Flugsicherung), confirmed the incident was officially reported. The Federal Bureau for Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) will evaluate the report to determine if a formal investigation is required.
