Peggy Guggenheim's influence on modern art movements
Peggy Guggenheim was a prolific 20th-century art patron whose collection and galleries played a critical role in shaping the modern arts movement. After being tutored by Marcel Duchamp, she opened her first gallery, Jeune, in London in 1938, introducing artists such as Henry Moore, Brancusi, Calder, and Kandinsky to audiences.
In 1941, she opened the landmark Art of This Century gallery in New York. Through this venue, she helped launch the career of Jackson Pollock and was instrumental in the development of Abstract Expressionism, effectively shifting the center of the visual art world from Europe to America. Her collection, housed in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni in Venice, remains a significant museum today.
