Pegida founder Lutz Bachmann resumes demonstrations in Dresden

Lutz Bachmann, the co-founder of the Pegida movement, has resumed organizing public gatherings in Dresden after a two-year hiatus. On Tuesday evening, approximately 450 people participated in a march under the motto “ZEIT AUFZUSTEHEN!” (Time to Stand Up!).

Bachmann introduced this event as a “Dresdner Abendspaziergang” (Dresden evening stroll) featuring a new format. Moving away from large stages and guest speakers, he opted for a simpler approach using only a megaphone, stating a desire to return to the movement’s origins.

While the march was largely peaceful, tensions arose at the Martin Luther Monument. Participants reportedly engaged in verbal and physical altercations with individuals filming the event, including journalists who were pulled from the monument's base. Police intervened to manage the situation. Approximately 100 counter-protesters were also present along the route, with police working to keep the opposing groups separate. Bachmann has announced another assembly in this format for December.
