Peixe municipality sued over school infrastructure failures

The Public Ministry of Tocantins (MPTO) has filed a civil public action against the municipality of Peixe to address severe infrastructure deficiencies at the Juscelino Kubitschek (JK) Municipal School annex. The facility, which serves approximately 144 students in a full-time education program, has faced extreme heat, inadequate air conditioning, a lack of functional water fountains, and a shortage of desks and chairs.

Due to the excessive temperatures, the school was forced to reduce its class hours. The MPTO is requesting that the municipality present a detailed plan to resolve these issues within 30 days, with all structural improvements to be completed within 90 days. Required measures include installing ceiling linings in classrooms, improving climate control systems, providing sufficient drinking fountains, and ensuring all students have proper furniture.

The situation has been under monitoring by the local prosecutor's office since 2024. Despite previous official requests for improvements, the municipal administration has struggled to maintain the facility, previously acknowledging difficulties with equipment such as non-repairable water fountains.
