Peja Court acquits Mehmetaj family of Gllogjan triple murder
The Basic Court in Peja has issued a verdict regarding the triple murder that occurred in Gllogjan on November 26, 2021, which resulted in the deaths of bus driver Gani Gjokaj and two 17-year-old students.
Kastriot and Kreshnik Mehmetaj were acquitted of the charge of aggravated murder, and Halil Mehmetaj was acquitted of inciting aggravated murder. However, the court found Halil and Kreshnik Mehmetaj guilty of the unauthorized possession, control, or possession of weapons. Halil Mehmetaj received a three-year prison sentence, while Kreshnik Mehmetaj was sentenced to one year. These sentences will be executed once the verdict becomes final, accounting for time already served in pre-trial detention.
The prosecution had alleged that the attack was motivated by revenge, claiming the Mehmetaj family held Gjokaj responsible for the suicide of their daughter, Heroina Mehmetaj. Prosecutor Sahide Gashi has indicated that the prosecution intends to appeal the decision.
