Pelagonia wheat producers demand state subsidies
Wheat producers in the Pelagonia region are demanding a state subsidy of 5 denars per kilogram from the Intervention Fund to offset low market prices. Currently, wheat is being purchased at rates between 9.5 and 10 denars per kilogram, which farmers claim fails to cover production costs.
During a meeting in Prilep, representatives from the Southwest Farmers Association, including Mile Kebakoski, raised concerns regarding market manipulation. They suggested that traders are purchasing wheat at low prices to profit from upcoming state reserve tenders. The farmers are also calling for the immediate payment of 2024 subsidies for area, seed material, and actual yield.
Additional demands include corrections to the 2026 subsidy program to address inconsistencies in seed material requirements and a request to limit or halt wheat and flour imports from Serbia. The farmers intend to submit these four formal requests to the Ministry of Agriculture next week.
