Pelion residents and officials oppose wind turbine installation

During a seminar held in Milies, scientists, local organizations, and residents expressed unanimous opposition to the installation of wind turbines in the Pelion region. The meeting addressed the new Special Spatial Plan for Renewable Energy Sources (RES).

Michalis Mitsikos, Mayor of South Pelion, reported that the municipality has filed appeals with the Council of State (StE) against the ministerial decision. He argued that the decision was made without consulting local municipalities and warned that even a single turbine could lead to widespread landscape alteration, citing South Euboea as a cautionary example.

Chrysa Tsaganou, President of the Thessaly Regional Council, called for a unified struggle to protect Pelion’s unique natural environment, noting its status under NATURA protection. Additionally, the Region of Thessaly has issued a unanimous negative opinion regarding the Special Spatial Plan, with officials stating their opposition to RES installations throughout the entire Thessaly prefecture.
