Pelister National Park to restore WWI-era road for tourism

Pelister National Park is renewing an old military road originally constructed during World War I. The project aims to transform the historic route into a 40-kilometer hiking and cycling path connecting Braichino with the Great Lake in Prespa.

While the primary function of the restored road is to enhance fire protection within the park, the project is also designed to promote eco-tourism and active recreation. The route will offer views of both Lake Prespa and the Pelagonia Valley. The national park has already begun clearing vegetation and rocks from parts of the track, specifically toward the Shiroka area, where a hunting lodge is also planned for renovation.

Director of Pelister National Park, Ivanco Toshevski, stated that the project fulfills a long-standing goal of connecting Braichino to the Great Lake. The development is part of a ten-year program for fire protection and regional tourism growth, which may be further bolstered by the planned opening of the Markov Nog border crossing in 2028.
