Pelješac Bridge faces structural concerns and repair disputes

The Pelješac Bridge in Croatia is facing structural concerns following the appearance of cracks in its protective layer and pillars. Some cracks are reported to be between three and six centimeters deep, raising fears that moisture and salt penetration could lead to the corrosion of reinforcement steel and compromise the structural integrity of the pillars.

Unofficial estimates suggest that repairs could cost between five and six million euros. There is ongoing tension regarding financial responsibility, with discussions involving the Chinese contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). While some suggest the rapid construction pace may have contributed to the defects, there are reports that the contractor may seek compensation for repair costs.

Croatian officials have attempted to reassure the public, stating that the cracks are limited to the protective layer and that the bridge remains structurally sound. However, public skepticism remains high due to the visible nature of the damage occurring so soon after the bridge's opening in July 2022.
