Pella police solve telephone fraud involving gold and cash theft
Police in Pella have solved a telephone fraud case involving an elderly couple who were targeted on July 9, 2026. The perpetrators managed to steal 220 gold sovereigns, 7,500 euros in cash, and jewelry valued at approximately 15,000 euros.
The scam began when an accomplice called the couple's landline, impersonating an employee from the electricity distribution company, DEDDIE, and claiming there was a problem with the local electrical voltage. Subsequently, other accomplices contacted the victims via mobile phones, instructing them to wrap their valuables and cash in aluminum foil, place them under the electrical panel, and leave their front door open.
Authorities have identified one Greek national, and a case file has been prepared against him for submission to the Prosecutor of First Instance in Giannitsa. Investigations are ongoing to identify the remaining accomplices and determine if they are involved in similar incidents. The Central Macedonia Regional Police Directorate has advised citizens to remain vigilant against unknown callers impersonating utility employees.
