Pellet boiler maintenance impacts heating efficiency and fuel costs

Regular maintenance of pellet boilers is essential for heating efficiency and cost control. Even a single millimeter of soot buildup on combustion chamber walls can act as an insulator, reducing heat transfer efficiency by 10 percent and increasing fuel consumption.

Maintenance is categorized into three phases:

Weekly: The burner and ash pan require frequent attention. For high-quality A1 class pellets, cleaning the burner and emptying the ash pan should occur every three to five days. For lower-quality A2 or uncertified pellets that produce more slag and sand, cleaning may be required every one to two days to prevent clogging and backfire risks.

Monthly: A deeper cleaning of the boiler interior, including the combustion chamber walls and heat exchangers, is necessary. Users should scrape soot from the walls until the metal is clean and use a vacuum to clear the turbulators (springs) to ensure proper flue gas flow.

Annually: A general service should be performed when the boiler is turned off, typically at the end of the heating season or just before it begins in autumn, to prevent expensive mechanical failures.
