Peloponnese history features ancient Lykosoura and revolutionary Papari

The Peloponnese region of Greece holds significant historical and mythological importance, highlighted by the heritage of Papari and the ancient city of Lykosoura.

Papari, a village in Arcadia, possesses a deep historical lineage. According to local tradition, the area was once the prehistoric settlement of Oresthasium. The village's name is believed to derive from a giant priest who settled the area around the 6th century. During the Greek War of Independence, Papari served as a critical site where the first assembly of warlords and high priests occurred on April 6, 1821, and where Theodoros Kolokotronis established the first Greek military camp.

In the ancient context, Lykosoura is cited by the geographer Pausanias as the oldest city in the world. Founded by Lykaon, the first king of the Arcadians, it served as the capital of Arcadia for generations. The city was renowned for the Sanctuary of Despoina, which featured significant religious architecture and housed a large statue of Damophon of Messenia.
