Greece-Turkey tensions rise as Mitsotakis rejects defense instructions
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with European Council President Antonio Costa in Athens to discuss regional security and EU policy. Mitsotakis issued a firm message to Ankara, stating that Greece is a peaceful nation that will not accept any external instructions regarding the strengthening of its national defense. He emphasized that Turkey's path toward European Union membership must be aligned with building good neighborly relations and respecting Greek sovereignty, particularly in light of recent tensions in the Aegean.
The discussions also focused on the European Union's Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034. Mitsotakis stressed the necessity of reaching a political agreement on the budget by the end of the year. He also noted that Greece is preparing for its presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2027.
In a separate diplomatic development, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized EU institutions, labeling them tools of Greek-Cypriot propaganda following discussions regarding a monument in Cyprus. Meanwhile, in Cyprus, President Nikos Christodoulides is scheduled to meet with Antonio Costa to address the EU budget and the Cyprus issue.
