Peloponnese schools face closure due to low enrollment

A government decree has ordered the temporary suspension of operations for 26 primary education units in the Peloponnese region for the 2026–2027 school year. The decision affects 19 kindergartens and 7 elementary schools across the prefectures of Argolis, Arcadia, Laconia, Corinthia, and Messenia.

The closures are attributed to zero enrollments, a lack of minimum required student numbers, or a shortage of teaching staff. The recommendation for these suspensions was submitted to the Ministry of Education by the Regional Director of Education, Dimitris Economopoulos.

Many of the affected institutions have remained closed for several years, with the official decisions being updated annually based on current enrollment data.
