Pelotas declares emergency following heavy rainfall

Mayor Fernando Marroni has signed a Level II emergency decree for the municipality of Pelotas following extreme weather events. The decree comes after intense rainfall, totaling 111.4 millimeters since Sunday, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 60 kilometers per hour and hail.

The rural areas have been the most severely impacted, with rising water levels in streams covering bridges and interrupting traffic. Local authorities reported that schools and health centers were unable to operate during the peak of the storm. While no injuries or displaced persons have been reported, officials noted that siltation in local streams has compromised infrastructure, including health posts and local commerce.

The mayor indicated that a full assessment of damages will be conducted once water levels recede, noting that maintenance will be required for bridge structures and headwaters.
