Pelé's 1958 World Cup Final Shirt Fetches $4.9 Million at Sotheby's Auction

Sotheby's auctioned the Number 10 jersey worn by Pelé in Brazil's 5‑2 victory over Sweden in the 1958 World Cup final. The cotton blue shirt sold in New York for $4.9 million to an undisclosed buyer, making it the second‑most valuable football shirt ever.

The shirt, which Pelé wore at age 17 to become the youngest goal‑scorer in a World Cup final, was originally gifted to teammate Dida, remained in the family for decades, then displayed at a Brazilian sports museum before the sale. The highest‑priced football shirt remains Diego Maradona's 1986 “Hand of God” jersey, which fetched $9.28 million.
