Pembina Pipeline greenlights Alberta power plant, eyes LNG pipeline expansion

Pembina Pipelines announced a final investment decision on the Greenlight Electricity Centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta. The C$4.6 billion, 932‑megawatt natural‑gas‑fired plant will supply power to a future hyperscale data centre, expected to be operational by late 2030. The project will consume about 150 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, creating additional demand for western Canadian gas producers.

The company also outlined a possible Phase 2 expansion of its Coastal GasLink pipeline that would double the line’s capacity to support LNG Canada and the Cedar LNG project. The expansion would add compressor stations at five points along the existing 670‑kilometre route and incorporate the Cedar Link Connector and LNG Link Meter Station, which began delivering gas to the LNG Canada facility on 27 April. Both initiatives aim to boost Alberta’s role in the energy and technology sectors.
