Pembrolizumab immunotherapy usage and stock in Kosovo

Pembrolizumab is an immunotherapy medication used to treat various cancers, including melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, kidney cancer, and bladder cancer. The drug works by blocking the PD-1 receptor, assisting the immune system in identifying and attacking tumor cells.

In Kosovo, the drug is utilized at the Oncology Clinic within the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (SHSKUK). According to SHSKUK’s 2024 work report, Pembrolizumab is among the immunotherapy products provided to the clinic, alongside Nivolumab. The Kosovo Ministry of Health also includes the medication in its designated therapies for specific oncological indications.

Recent stock reports for the Oncology Clinic show fluctuations in availability. On February 3, the stock was reported at 66 units, which decreased to 41 units by the first week of the current month. Treatment decisions are made by specialists based on tumor type, disease stage, and biological characteristics, as the medication is not suitable for all cancer patients and may cause side effects due to immune system activation.
