Pemex continues response to Krem-1 well fire in Veracruz, Mexico

Pemex reported that work to control the March 5 fire at the Krem-1 well in Las Choapas, Veracruz, remains ongoing. Specialized technical staff and service‑company crews are operating continuously, monitoring emissions, temperature and noise with mobile laboratory equipment accredited by the Institute of Petroleum of Mexico. Measured pollutant levels are reported to be below legal limits. Temperature normalizes beyond 200 m from the well and noise falls below permissible limits after 300 m; the nearest community is about four kilometres away and no vibrations have been detected beyond that point.

Containment dikes have been built around the well and barriers installed in nearby streams to limit liquid hydrocarbon runoff, which has markedly decreased. Recovered waste is sent to authorized treatment sites. Daily mobile medical units provide primary care to local residents, and a dedicated medical unit serves workers at the camp. To date, no cases of intoxication have been recorded. Pemex reaffirmed its commitment to protect the population, the environment and local development while aiming for a swift resolution of the incident.
