Pemex pipeline leak triggers oil spill response in Gulf of Mexico
A crude oil leak from a Pemex pipeline was detected on the morning of September 10 in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 46 nautical miles north of Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche. The leak originated from a subsea collection pipeline serving platforms in the Cantarell complex, including Ek-TA and Balam-TA.
Pemex has responded by depressurizing the pipeline, isolating it with safety valves, and initiating repair work, which includes seabed dredging and the installation of a metal enclosure. The Mexican Navy (Semar) activated its Local Contingency Plan through the Regional Emergency Management Group (GRAME), deploying the ocean patrol ARM ‘Guanajuato’, four vessels, two aircraft, and 255 naval personnel to support containment and recovery efforts.
The Observatorio Permanente del Golfo de México is monitoring the spill using satellite imagery, including Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Current drift models suggest the oil slick is moving west and is unlikely to reach the coast or sensitive areas within the next five days. However, authorities remain vigilant as a potential cold front over the next 10 days could alter the slick's trajectory.
