Pemex pipeline leaks cause spills in Campeche and Yucatán

Recent hydrocarbon leaks from Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) pipelines have caused environmental and economic concerns for fishing communities in Mexico. In the Campeche Gulf, local fishermen in Ciudad del Carmen warned that a leak in the Bay of Campeche will impact fish availability just weeks before the start of the capture season.

Vicencio Luna Pérez, president of the Federation of Coastal Fishermen of Ciudad del Carmen, criticized Pemex for its handling of the situation, noting that the company often claims leaks are controlled or non-existent. He called for an independent expert assessment to determine the true environmental and economic damage, as previous studies have often attributed pollution to natural sources rather than infrastructure failure.

In another incident in Puerto Progreso, Yucatán, a small fissure in an aging Pemex marine pipeline caused a diesel spill near the Fiscal Pier. Local fishermen documented the leak, noting visible changes in water color and a strong odor. This marks the third reported incident of this nature in the area. Pemex divers have been deployed to seal the leak and prevent further discharge.
