Pemex plans lithium extraction and EV charging expansion

Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has outlined a new roadmap for sustainable projects and energy transition through the Hydrocarbon Sector Development Plan, as published by the Ministry of Energy (Sener). The plan focuses on diversifying revenue and reducing emissions through several key initiatives.

One major objective is the commercial extraction of lithium from oil brines. Pemex expects to begin investing in this area in 2028, with operations projected to start by 2030. Additionally, the company plans to develop solar farms using its own land and infrastructure to generate electricity for self-consumption or sale to the wholesale electricity market.

To support electromobility, Pemex intends to install electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This will be implemented gradually, starting with Pemex's own facilities and eventually expanding to its national network of service stations. The company is considering collaboration schemes with third parties to develop this infrastructure, with investments and operations expected to begin as early as 2026.
