Pemex records multiple oil spills and leaks in 2026

Pemex has recorded at least 10 emergencies in the Gulf of Mexico and southern Mexico during the first nine months of 2026, including oil spills, leaks, and fires. These incidents have resulted in fatalities, injuries, and significant environmental damage across regions such as Tabasco, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Campeche.

On September 10, a pressure drop was detected in a subsea collection pipeline connected to several platforms in the Cantarell extraction zone. Pemex responded by isolating the pipeline and deploying vessels for containment, stating that monitoring showed no hydrocarbons reaching the coasts of Campeche.

Earlier in the year, a major spill in the Abkatún-Cantarell area affected over 1,000 kilometers of coastline. Investigations revealed a loss of mechanical integrity in an oil pipeline that had not been previously reported to company leadership.

In response to reports of a potential spill near Progreso, Yucatán, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) conducted maritime inspections. While monitoring for contaminants, naval personnel reported that no spills were identified in the specific area inspected near the Progreso dock.
