Pemex refinery attack in Minatitlán leaves two security guards dead
Two security guards working for Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) were killed following an armed attack at the Lázaro Cárdenas refinery in Minatitlán, Veracruz. The incident occurred around 10:00 PM on Saturday, October 10, at the facility's north entrance.
According to reports, an assailant—possibly traveling on a motorcycle—approached the checkpoint and opened fire directly on the personnel. The victims have been identified as Eduardo Espinoza Gómez, who died at the scene, and Oscar Ochoa, who succumbed to his injuries at the Pemex Regional Hospital approximately 24 hours later.
Following the shooting, a major security operation was deployed involving the National Guard, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), and state police. Authorities recovered more than ten shell casings at the site. While Pemex initially released statements focusing on two injured workers, subsequent reports confirmed the fatalities. No suspects have been apprehended, and investigations by the Veracruz State Attorney General's Office are ongoing to determine the motive and identify the perpetrators.
