Pemex spill in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca sparks community protests and cleanup

On July 28‑29 a hydrocarbon spill was detected off Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, contaminating four beaches—Salinas del Marqués, Punta Conejo, Playa Brasil and Playa Azul. Petroleum residues were reported along the shoreline and the municipal government declared a priority response, establishing a Local Coordination Committee under the National Contingency Plan for Hydrocarbon Spills.

Fishermen, salt‑producer cooperatives and local residents convened an assembly led by municipal agent Karina Mabel Ureña Saavedra. They demanded direct negotiations with Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and federal and state authorities, rejected the use of intermediaries, and proposed a temporary‑employment program that would hire community members to carry out the beach cleanup. Cleaning operations began on July 29, but Pemex and federal officials had not yet issued a statement.
