Pemex’s Krem-1 well fire triggers NAFTA‑era environmental commission review

The Krem-1 exploratory oil well in Las Choapas, Veracruz, has been burning continuously since 5 March 2026, releasing gas, odours and contaminating water, soil and air. On 9 June, a confidential petition alleging severe, ongoing environmental damage was submitted to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), the trilateral body created by Mexico, the United States and Canada under the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement. The CEC logged the request on 10 June (file SEM‑26‑006) and will decide by 9 July whether the case meets admissibility criteria.

Pemex announced it will compensate affected families and producers, build five health clinics, and pave a 26‑km road (Río Playas–Remolino) at a cost of over 200 million pesos. Community leaders continue to report intense fumes, health discomfort and damage to crops, livestock and infrastructure, and they question the timeline for extinguishing the well. The petition also accuses Mexican environmental agencies of failing to enforce regulations and conduct thorough inspections.
