Pemex intensifies efforts to seal Krem-1 well in Las Choapas, Veracruz
The exploratory well Krem-1, operated by Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), exploded and caught fire on 5 March 2026 in the rural municipality of Las Choapas, Veracruz. More than 130 days later the well remains uncontrolled, prompting local residents to report health problems—including headaches, nausea, respiratory difficulties—and damage to crops, livestock and water sources.
Pemex says the current flow consists mainly of salty water in liquid and vapor form, with no critical gas levels detected. The company has stepped up technical work, installing a new valve‑and‑pipe system to stop the flow before permanently plugging the well. Continuous monitoring for gases and explosivity continues, and containment barriers have been placed in nearby streams to recover hydrocarbon residues.
Mobile medical units have visited 42 surrounding communities, providing general‑medicine, dental care and clinical tests such as electrocardiograms, X‑rays and blood analyses. Pemex maintains coordination with state and municipal authorities and says the definitive closure could be achieved within the next few days, though local officials warn the process might extend into October. Community members continue to protest, demanding full environmental remediation and compensation.
