Penang Air Itam–Lim Chong Eu bypass project reaches 93% completion
The RM851 million Air Itam–Lim Chong Eu Expressway (LCE) bypass project in Penang has reached 93.19% physical progress as of September 30. The 5.7km route, which connects Bandar Ayer Itam and Farlim directly to the LCE, is expected to be completed by April 2027.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the contractor, Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd (CZC), has increased the number of working teams to meet the deadline. While main works such as bridge structures and viaducts are finished, focus has shifted to paving, road barriers, and parapet connections. Before opening to the public, the route must pass a technical compliance inspection and a road safety audit.
To address concerns regarding project funding, the Chief Minister clarified that CZC will cover the remaining RM50 million required for completion. In exchange, the state government will transfer ownership of specific land lots in Gurney Bay to the firm. The project is intended to reduce congestion along Green Lane and Jalan Masjid Negeri.
