Penang authorities investigate Taman Seri Rambai landslide
Following a fatal landslide in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, on October 25, 2026, the Penang state government and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) are awaiting investigation results from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (JKKP) to determine further actions.
The incident, which occurred around 8:36 AM, resulted in the death of 73-year-old Dr. Wong Kar Lin. Two other residents, Chang Mei Nuo and Wong Poh Lim, managed to escape the debris.
As a safety precaution, authorities have issued evacuation notices for four houses (numbers 1, 3, 5, and 7) deemed at risk. Two other homes were cleared for re-occupancy following safety assessments by the Northeast District Disaster Management Committee. MBPP has also issued a stop-work notice to the developer under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.
A special meeting involving technical agencies, including the Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia and the Public Works Department, is scheduled for November 2, 2026, to discuss long-term mitigation strategies. The developer has been ordered to implement immediate erosion control measures, such as installing safety barriers and using geotextiles to cover exposed slopes.
