Penang enhances cultural heritage through new festival and heritage status

Penang is expanding its cultural recognition through new heritage declarations and upcoming festivals. The state has officially declared the Teong Guan Phor Thor, or Hungry Ghost Festival, as state heritage, effective June 25. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that this recognition aims to preserve traditions and celebrate the state's multicultural identity, noting that over 200 groups organize these celebrations annually.

In addition to the festival declaration, the state is preparing for the Citra Mutiara Festival (FCM) 2026. Scheduled for September 11 to 13 at Lebuh Armenian in George Town, the three-day event aims to attract approximately 10,000 local and international visitors. The festival will showcase Penang's arts, culture, heritage, and gastronomy through various performances, exhibitions, and demonstrations.

These initiatives align with efforts by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and the Penang state government to strengthen cultural tourism in anticipation of Visit Malaysia Year 2026-2027.
