Penang food premises receive BeSS hygiene recognition

A significant number of food premises in Penang have received the Clean and Safe (BeSS) recognition since the program's introduction in 2018. Reports indicate that between 400 and 655 food operators across the state have achieved this certification, which is awarded by the Ministry of Health Malaysia based on strict hygiene and food safety criteria.

Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, the State Youth, Sports, and Health Committee Chairman, noted that the BeSS recognition emphasizes not only cleanliness and safety but also the maintenance of smoke-free environments. This is part of the 'Clean Premises, Smoke-Free' (BeBAS) 2026 program, which monitors compliance with the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024.

Authorities warned that the BeSS status can be revoked if premises fail to maintain the required hygiene standards or experience a drop in quality scores. Additionally, enforcement actions are being taken regarding smoking violations, with thousands of compounds issued to individuals smoking in food premises and owners failing to display required signage.
