Penang government prioritizes legal compliance for Jelutong Landfill project

The Penang government is prioritizing legal and environmental compliance regarding the proposed closure and rehabilitation of the Jelutong Landfill. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that any decision to proceed with the project is strictly subject to the approval of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

To avoid potential legal complications, the state has granted PLB Engineering Bhd an extension of time (EOT) until October 18 to secure the necessary EIA approval. The RM1 billion project involves the reclamation of 28.3 hectares of coastal land along Karpal Singh Drive.

The decision to grant the extension has faced criticism from the Protect Karpal Singh Drive Action Committee, which noted that previous assurances had been made that no further extensions would be provided if the developer failed to meet earlier deadlines. In response, Chow emphasized the necessity of following prescribed legal procedures to prevent future litigation and financial damages.
