Penang government tackles pig farm sewage pollution in Kampung Selamat

The Penang government has implemented measures to combat sewage pollution originating from pig farms in Kampung Selamat, near Tasek Gelugor. As part of these initiatives, all livestock farms in the area have been mandated to transport their wastewater to a biogas plant in Ampang Jajar since May.

H’ng Mooi Lye, chairman of the state local government, urban, and rural planning committee, stated that these steps aim to prevent waste from being discharged directly into local drains or rivers. The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) is conducting weekly monitoring and surprise inspections to ensure compliance. While local MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan has called for urgent action and is gathering scientific evidence regarding long-standing pollution issues, H’ng noted that recent inspections have not found farms discharging waste directly into waterways.

Additionally, the state government is addressing the accumulation of old sediment and sewage waste in the area. Once cleaning processes are complete, funds are expected to be allocated for desilting work on local drains.
