Penang official calls for safety support for George Town heritage buildings
Penang state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai has called for a combination of enforcement, technical guidance, and financial assistance to address the safety of aging heritage buildings in George Town. This follows an incident on August 4 where falling debris from a heritage shophouse injured two tourists.
With over 2,000 pre-war buildings in George Town, Wong emphasized that many owners may lack the financial resources required for expensive restoration and conservation works. He suggested that the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) should work more closely with property owners to provide advisory services and aid in meeting heritage conservation guidelines.
While advocating for support, Wong maintained that public safety must remain the priority. He stated that businesses operating in buildings that pose structural risks should be advised to cease operations until necessary restoration works are completed.
