Penang to host Coffee Festival and George Town Arts Festival in August 2026

Penang will stage two major cultural events in August 2026. The Penang Coffee Festival runs from 14‑16 August at Sunshine Central in Air Itam, featuring specialty coffee tastings, workshops, product showcases and the Malaysia AeroPress Championship (Northern Region). Councilor Koay Gaik Kee highlighted the festival’s role in strengthening the local coffee ecosystem, while Legislative Assembly Speaker Law Choo Kiang said the state could become a destination for international coffee enthusiasts. The event also launched the CoffeeCity Journal to document Penang’s evolving coffee culture.

The 17th George Town Festival takes place from 1‑9 August across the UNESCO World Heritage city, under the theme “Beyond Boundaries”. More than 40 programmes, many free, include a grand opening at Padang Kota Lama with the German DUNDU performance, a cultural showcase by Alena Murang, and nightly projection‑mapping on the Town Hall façade. Venues such as ChinaHouse, Hikayat and Cultprint host contemporary visual art exhibitions, while collaborations with artists from ten countries bring global perspectives to the festival.
