UK railway sector updates: driver recruitment and safety investigations

The UK railway sector is undergoing several developments, ranging from workforce recruitment to safety investigations. In East Sussex, an investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) into a derailment in Lewes has identified a “track geometry irregularity” as a likely cause. The incident, which occurred on a hot day in August and injured 30 people, may have involved track buckling due to high temperatures. Investigators are examining weather conditions and track status.

Additionally, several heritage railways are hosting events. The Kirklees Light Railway is preparing for its 20th annual Steam and Diesel Gala in September, while the Llangollen Railway is celebrating its 50th anniversary with various steam and diesel locomotive displays and special seasonal services.
