Penedo selected as filming location for movie inspired by Jorge de Lima
The municipality of Penedo, Brazil, has been selected as a filming location for the movie ‘Calunga’, a cinematic adaptation of the work by Alagoas writer Jorge de Lima. A production team recently conducted a technical visit to the UNESCO Creative City of Cinema to evaluate locations, including the historic center, colonial mansions, and the São Francisco River region.
Scheduled for 2027, the film follows a man returning to his hometown to transform local reality while confronting traditional structures and coronelismo. The production is expected to provide economic opportunities for local professionals in various sectors, such as acting, scenography, costume design, and carpentry.
Jair Galvão, Secretary of Tourism and Creative Economy, noted that the interest in Penedo aligns with its UNESCO recognition, which helps integrate audiovisual production with local culture and tourism.
